What is Sclerotherapy and what causes visible leg veins?
Sclerotherapy is the treatment of veins in the legs and elsewhere by the injection of sclerosing solution into the vein. The treatment is used particularly for spider veins and certain varicose veins. Doppler/Ultrasound may be required to assess the leg veins before treatment. These visible veins are contributed to by genetics, treatment. These visible veins are contributed to by genetics, pregnancy, hormones, prolonged standing, trauma, overweight etc.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
The sclerosing solution injected into the vein irritates the internal lining of the vessel causing it to swell, stick together and then fade from view over a period of weeks. Ultimately the vessel is broken down and removed by the body's natural cleaning process.
Although dilated blood vessels do carry blood, they are not particularly efficient and are often unnecessary to the circulatory system. The body will have already established alternative routes so the blood is able to travel back more efficiently to the heart. Because of this, these vessels can be treated without damaging the circulatory system, and treatment actually improves venous circulation. The treatment may also relieve any symptoms, such as aching that the veins may cause.
What happens during and after the treatment?
The treatment is performed while you are lying down. The doctor will guide a very fine needle to the centre of the vein and inject a precise amount of solution into the vessel, sealing the vein off at that point. A cotton ball is then taped over each injection site and a compression stocking is worn for a time following the completion of your treatment. The doctor will advise how long these should be worn for at the time of your consultation. You are advised to walk for a minimum of thirty minutes, twice each day to reduce the pressure on the superficial veins following your treatment.
It is best to wear loose slacks to your appointment, as they will conceal the compression stocking. It is also a good idea to wear flat or sports shoes so you can walk comfortably after your procedure. Dr not apply any moisturizer to your legs on the day of your treatment, or use fake tanning products for at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment. If possible, do not expose your legs to the sun without 30+ sunblock for at least a week prior to treatment.
Is the treatment painful?
As previously mentioned, sclerotherapy involves multiple injections of sclerosing solution. Although very fine needles are used, injection of the solution may result in a temporary hot stinging sensation. Pain levels will vary from patient to patient however, if you are particularly concerned please do not hesitate to discuss this with the doctor.
What kind of result can I expect?
Between 2 and 4 treatment sessions are usually required to achieve a 70-90% improvement in the overall appearance in most patients. The doctor will estimate how many treatments are necessary for you at the time of your consultation.
